Read our new guest blog featuring leading drone business owners. Meet Cameron Grant, the founder of The High Points, a Las Vegas-based fine art photography business specializing in HDR landscape photography and aerial imaging.
1. Understanding Urban Drone Operations
Operating drones in Las Vegas presents unique challenges that go far beyond basic piloting skills. Flying in densely populated urban areas, especially in Zero Grid airspace, requires meticulous planning and constant awareness. With over 300 missions flown in this challenging environment, I've learned that success depends on thorough preparation and understanding of the complex regulatory landscape.
2. Navigate Regulations and Security
In Las Vegas, drone operations are under constant surveillance by 'Fusion Watch,' a multi-agency task force that monitors airspace 24/7. As a drone pilot, it's crucial to maintain proper documentation and be prepared for interactions with law enforcement, including the Las Vegas Metro Police's dedicated drone squad. Professional conduct and thorough knowledge of regulations are essential for successful operations.

3. Prioritize Safety and Communication
When operating in busy urban environments, having a Visual Observer (VO) is invaluable. They serve as your first line of defense, handling public inquiries and helping manage potential conflicts. Remember that you're sharing airspace with helicopter traffic, and it's crucial to yield and maintain constant vigilance. Never fly over moving vehicles or people without proper waivers, regardless of transit status.
4. Invest in Quality Equipment
My journey into drone photography began when DJI acquired Hasselblad in 2017, sparking my interest in UAVs. In late 2022, I invested in the DJI Mavic 3 Classic, which combines excellent image quality with reliable performance. When choosing equipment, consider both the technical capabilities and the regulatory requirements for your intended use case.

5. Maintain Professional Standards

- Remaining calm and professional during law enforcement interactions
- Having documentation readily available
- Being polite and patient with public inquiries
- Being willing to cancel missions when conditions aren't ideal
- Continuously learning and staying updated on regulations
6. Building a Successful Photography Business
Success in drone photography requires more than just technical skills. It's essential to:
- Develop a unique style and specialty
- Build a strong portfolio
- Maintain high professional standards
